Itinerario
- We begin our journey early in the morning, departing from Cusco and heading southeast through the traditional districts of San Sebastián and San Jerónimo. The road leads us past the serene waters of Wacarpay Lake before turning toward Huambutio and crossing the bridge to Huancarani. As we continue ascending, the scenery gradually transforms into broad Andean valleys framed by majestic mountain peaks, offering an inspiring start to the day.
- Around 8:30 AM we arrive in the historic town of Paucartambo, where a fresh and energizing breakfast awaits at Q’inty Nature Café–Restaurant. Afterward, the route continues upward through a variety of ecological zones, each one unveiling new landscapes and habitats. Nearing elevations of approximately 4,700 meters, the surroundings open into vast highlands where it is common to observe mountain geese, llamas, alpacas, and other species that thrive in the high-Andean environment.
- Upon reaching K’allacancha, the landscape shifts into the classic puna grasslands. Here we visit the traditional village of Chua Chua, a peaceful settlement encircled by circular stone corrals, or kanchas, and home to herding families who continue to practice ancestral Andean ways of life. A warm welcome is offered by a Paq’o, an Andean spiritual priest, who will guide us through a profound Gratitude Ceremony honoring Pachamama, Mother Earth, and the Apus, the sacred mountain spirits. This meaningful and participatory ritual creates a unique opportunity to connect spiritually with the landscape and the living Andean worldview.
- Following the ceremony, we enjoy a nourishing box lunch accompanied by coca and muña herbal infusions, traditional remedies that aid in acclimatization and promote relaxation. We then spend an hour learning about the artistry of Q’ero textiles, discovering symbolic patterns, natural dyeing methods, and ancient weaving techniques that have been carefully preserved for generations. There is also free time to appreciate the handmade fabrics or simply take in the tranquility of the highlands.
- In the late afternoon, we begin our return to Paucartambo, where dinner at a local restaurant (not included) awaits along with a restful night to prepare for the next day’s experiences.
- After breakfast at Q’inty Nature Café, we set out for a relaxing and rejuvenating day. The route follows the winding Mapacho River, passing through historic villages and former haciendas that reflect the region’s colonial past. As we approach the Chimur Bridge—an ancient section of the Inca Trail, or Qhapaq Ñan, once used to reach the Antisuyo jungle region—the landscape transitions into a lush and serene valley.
- A short drive from the bridge brings us to the thermo-medicinal hot springs of Chimur, where naturally warm waters ranging from 46°C to 53°C flow into clear, soothing pools. The site offers multiple bathing areas, changing rooms, rinse showers, and peaceful rest zones. Rich in minerals such as iron, sulfur, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and silicon, these waters are believed to aid with circulation, ease stress, and provide relief for rheumatic or skin-related conditions. Here, guests can fully unwind while surrounded by quiet natural beauty.
- After an enjoyable and restorative soak, we share an outdoor regional lunch prepared on-site, allowing time to savor local flavors and appreciate the calm atmosphere of the Chimur Valley.
- In the afternoon, we begin the journey back, returning first to Paucartambo and then continuing on to Cusco, concluding the experience refreshed and revitalized.
