Itinerario
- Your Amazon adventure begins with an early morning departure from Cusco, crossing the high Andean ranges with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, and traditional rural villages. Along the route, you will visit Ninamarca, a fascinating pre-Inca burial site belonging to the Lupaca culture, where ancient stone chullpas overlook the surrounding mountains.
- Continue to the picturesque colonial town of Paucartambo, known for its whitewashed adobe houses, blue balconies, and vibrant festivals. Here, enjoy a warm breakfast and a short walk through the historic center before continuing your journey.
- The road then climbs to Acjanaco, the official entrance to Manu National Park, where the landscape begins to transform dramatically. From this point, you will descend into the lush, mist-covered Cloud Forest, one of the most biodiverse environments in the Andes. This region is home to cascading waterfalls, delicate orchids, bromeliads, and a variety of exotic birds such as Quetzals, Trogons, and Tanagers. With a bit of luck, you may also observe charismatic primates, including the Woolly Monkey and the Large-headed Capuchin, as they move through the treetops.
- Before sunset, enjoy your first guided nature walk, allowing you to acclimate to the jungle environment and begin spotting wildlife in its natural habitat. Afterward, continue to Bambu Lodge, where you will settle in, enjoy a comforting dinner, and relax to the soothing sounds of the surrounding forest.
Overnight: Bambu Lodge
- After a refreshing breakfast surrounded by the sounds of the forest, continue your journey by road as you travel through the transition zone between the Cloud Forest and the Lowland Amazon. This area is known for its remarkable biodiversity and offers excellent opportunities for wildlife observation. As you pass through the small agricultural towns of Patria and Pillcopata, keep your eyes open for species such as Red Howler Monkeys, Toppin’s Titi Monkeys, Squirrel Monkeys, the vibrant Emerald Toucanet, the Roadside Hawk, and the unmistakable Oropendolas with their pendulum-like nests.
- Upon reaching Atalaya Port, the landscape opens up to reveal the majestic Madre de Dios River. Here, you will board a motorized canoe and begin a peaceful navigation downstream, allowing you to fully appreciate the surrounding rainforest and its immense biodiversity. This scenic river journey leads you to Soga de Oro Lodge, your next ecolodge nestled deep within the Amazon.
- In the afternoon, embark on a guided hike through secondary forest toward Machuwasi Lake, a tranquil and wildlife-rich oasis. Once there, board traditional balsa rafts to explore its calm waters. This unique experience provides excellent chances to observe Hoatzins—prehistoric-looking birds known for their distinctive appearance—along with monkeys, colorful birds, small caimans, and an array of other aquatic and forest species that inhabit this serene environment.
- After an eventful day, return to the lodge to enjoy dinner and relax as the rainforest comes alive with nocturnal sounds.
Overnight: Soga de Oro Lodge
- Rise before sunrise for one of the Amazon’s most spectacular wildlife shows. A short boat ride along the river takes you to a parrot clay lick (collpa), where hundreds of birds gather in the early morning light. Here, you may witness Blue-headed Parrots, Yellow-crowned Parrots, White-eyed Parakeets, Dusky-headed Parakeets, and the impressive Chestnut-fronted Macaws as they descend to eat the mineral-rich clay essential to their diet. The vibrant colors and chorus of calls create an unforgettable natural spectacle.
- Return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast before setting off on a guided excursion into the primary rainforest. This hike takes you deep into untouched jungle, where towering ancient trees, giant palms, vines, medicinal plants, and hidden wildlife reveal the true essence of the Amazon. Your guide will share insights into the ecology of the forest, animal behavior, and the traditional uses of many plants.
- After exploring, return to Soga de Oro Lodge for lunch and a well-deserved rest. In the afternoon, enjoy a relaxing walk along nearby trails or choose to unwind and swim in the refreshing river—an ideal way to appreciate the peacefulness of the surrounding nature.
- Following dinner, you may participate in an optional night walk, a highlight for many visitors. With your guide and flashlight, step into the forest after dark to encounter nocturnal creatures such as frogs, insects, night monkeys, spiders, and other animals that come alive when the sun sets. The sounds and atmosphere of the nighttime jungle offer a completely different and thrilling perspective.
Overnight: Soga de Oro Lodge
- After waking to the peaceful sounds of the rainforest, enjoy a final breakfast at the lodge. Then board your motorized canoe for the scenic journey upriver back toward Atalaya Port, giving you a last chance to admire the river’s wildlife and lush vegetation.
- Once in Atalaya, continue your return by road, ascending once more through the dense greenery of the Cloud Forest. As you travel, keep an eye out for final wildlife sightings—colorful birds, playful monkeys, and the ever-changing plant life that characterizes this remarkable ecosystem. The journey offers a perfect moment to reflect on the incredible diversity and natural beauty experienced over the past days.
